Unlike the situation in Port au Prince the capital, Cape Haitian is safe and secure.
Cap-Haitien is the first city in Haiti to be founded. It was the capital of Santo Domingo and then of Haiti. It includes the oldest cathedral in the country, Notre-Dame de l'Assomption Cathedral, built when the city was founded in 1670. Since 1995, the city center has been classified as national heritage because of the rich history of its infrastructures. Cap-Haitien concentrates a large number of forts, such as Fort Magny, Fort Picolet, Fort Belly, Fort Saint-Joseph, etc. It is one of the few cities in Haiti where there is a currency museum, inaugurated in 2012. Cap-Haitien is open to the American and Caribbean space with an international airport (the second in the country) bearing the name of Hugo Chavez and a port. Cap-Haitien has many “clairin” distilleries (guildives), a major symbol of the colonial period. The surroundings of Cape-Haitien are places with key moments in the history of Haiti: Milot with the National Historical Park (Citadelle la Ferrière and Sans-Souci Palace), Limbé with Fort Dahomey and the Guahaba Museum, Fort Liberté with its triumphal arch and its colonial fountain and Limonade with La Nativité (a fort).
